As part of Castlemaine Fringe Festival, this exhibition in the centre of Castlemaine at the Historic Market Building, and coinciding with the Frida Kahlo exhibition just up the road in Bendigo, invited us to respond to her art and life.
Frida Kahlo’s art was indivisible from her life. Her self-portraits often included reference to her physical body, its injuries and medical interventions. Her paintings and self-presentation were life affirming and yet her physical vulnerability was inescapable. My two works, ‘Art is Life’ and ‘Broken Venus’, explore the ways her heart appears in her work as both a visceral and emotional centre, both literally depicted and metaphorically present.
